Hockey Ratings Soar!
"A script so classic that if it were a movie, they would send it back because it was unrealistic," commented Bob Costas on what nhl.com cites as the "most watched television broadcast in Canadian history." The 2010 Olympic Gold Medal hockey game between the U.S. and Canada drew 16.6 million viewers in Canada (80% of the entire Canadian population watched).

To compare it with major sporting events in the United States, the game between Canada and the United States surpassed the 2010 Rose Bowl, the 2009 World Series, the 2009 men’s NCAA basketball championship game, the 2009 NBA Finals, and the 2010 Daytona 500 in terms of viewers.

Canadian Specialty TV Still on the Rise
Specialty stations in Canada charted strong growth in adult audience numbers during this past television season, according to BBM research.

Overall, the 25-54 audience for English-language analog specialty stations was 7% higher for the period between Sept. 1, 2008 and May 17, 2009 compared to the same period the year before. Digital specialty channels, meanwhile, enjoyed a 12% boost. Canwest’s History channel was 2nd in specialty ranking. Four other Canwest properties featured in the top 10, with HGTV coming in at No. 6 and Showcase, Food Network and TVtropolis ranking eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.

96.7% of all Canadian TV viewing is LIVE! In 2009, the Advertising Research Foundation stated that TV advertising is as effective as it ever has been and in many cases, TV has become more effective.

Recent claims have suggested that many Canadians are not watching television commercials, but according to BBM PPM data this is not the case. In order to fast forward through commercials there are two requirements one must have. The first is that you must have PVR and the second is you must be watching recorded or time delayed television. However, even with PVR you cannot skip over commercials entirely.
